Embedded applications

I read a fascinating article about embedded web applications in the September/October 2007 issue of Online Magazine. One application that caught my imagination was Zoho Creator, a web based database application. Imagine being able to create a database to display data, collect data, or search records, all without having to know anything about programs like Microsoft Access. It can even convert an Excel spreadsheet to an instant database. It can even be an open database so users can add, edit, or delete records.

Possible uses:
  • Create an RSVP form/database
  • Member driven list/database of must read articles or books
  • Member driven list of fun books read
  • Personal use - create your own catalog!

Databases can be either private (must log in for access) or public (anyone can view) Potential drawbacks for the public versions are that they are indexed by search engines, and if you allow users to add, edit, or delete records, one disgruntled person can wipe out or add false information. Still, a potentially useful application that does not require advanced programming skills, just a little thought in form layout.

See examples at creator.zoho.com.
