Technology expectations as described by lawyers

I've noted a flurry of articles and blog posts around the issue of lawyers and their familiarity with technology issues, specifically social media and Microsoft Office software. Some say young attorneys should know how to post on social media and monitor different feeds. Some say their job is to learn how to be lawyers first. Some say they should know how to use software efficiently enough to sort lists in Excel and do first draft word processing.

I also found a post about librarians and skill development, and thought it fit with the general theme.

Mobile Technology Online Conference

Title:  Access by Touch: Delivering Library Services Through Mobile Technologies

When: 9:00am – 4:30pm central, Friday, June 8, 2012
Where:  Online – from the comfort of your office
Website:  http://www.amigos.org/mobile_tech

From computers to the Internet, libraries have successfully met the challenge of adapting their services to changing technologies. Today's challenge is delivering services to smartphones, eBook readers, and tablets to users on the go who now view more content on mobile devices than desktop and laptop computers. CDs and DVDs are becoming passé, eBook sales outpace paper books, and users increasingly download music, movies, and books from iTunes and Kindle, storing their purchases in the Cloud.

This online conference will address the technical issues related to pushing library content and services to mobile users. Topics to be addressed include selecting and creating eBooks, building mobile-friendly websites, selecting and developing apps for library users, and circulating library materials through mobile devices. Our list of speakers includes librarians, academics, and business trendsetters. Amigos members and non-members, join our online conversation and be a part of this informative, interactive June 8 event.

It’s difficult to keep up with changes in mobile technologies, so spend time with us June 8th to bring yourself up to speed. Seating is limited and early bird registration ends May 25, 2012.  Both individuals and groups are welcome. Recordings will be available to all registrants. To learn more and to register, visit the conference website at http://www.amigos.org/mobile_tech.

The 500+ Friend Introvert

The 500+ Friend Introvert

This post from 3 Geeks and a Law Blog intrigues me. Younger people have no problems posting, tweeting, meeting people virtually, but are shy in real life crowds. Is this indicative of the times, or did we have more mentors in the past to shepard us through the first few conferences and social hours?

How a big law firm replaced laptops with iPads
A prestigious law firm outfits its attorneys with Apple iPads and finds it's worth the significant effort

Earlier this year, New York-based law firm Proskauer completed a massive technology redesign that would make Silicon Valley tech companies gush with envy. At the heart of the redesign was the Apple iPad 2. "I'm pretty sure we were the first, if not only major law firm, to do it," says COO Arthur Gurwitz. "I think it was important to be first with the iPad. I call it brand enhancement." (cont)

Twitter, Facebook & LinkedIn, Oh My!

Lisa Salazar of 3 Geeks and a Law Blog ponders social media, linking between various social media sites, and how the Internet is similar to the human body. She also briefly discusses several new social media apps for smart phones.

It's a fairly long post, but well worth reading. Bonus: she presented at March 2011 HALL/SWALL seminar.
