Dallas Public Libraries Receive Large Donation

“This morning, City Hall and Comerica Bank announced that the company is donating $50,000 to adopt two libraries in Southern Dallas. The Polk-Wisdom and North Oak Cliff branch libraries will benefit from the donation at a time when City Hall has had to slash funding for library staff and materials."

COPYRIGHT BASICS: [ALMOST] EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT COPYRIGHT

The U.S. Copyright Office will present a brief overview of copyright issues including how copyright protection developed, what kind of protection it provides, the application process, and practical pointers on the “do’s and don’ts” of using copyrighted materials. Rights of users versus the rights of creators, what constitutes fair use, and answers to questions frequently handled by the Office will also be discussed. The session will cover new challenges presented by a digital world including things like how end-user license agreements (EULAs) and digital rights management (DRM) affect fair use.
Attendees can submit their own questions in advance (email johanna.johnson@dallaslibrary.org) or ask them during the Q&A session at the end of this workshop.
Please register early as seating is limited.
Featured Speakers:
Peter Vankevich has been head of the Copyright Information Section since 1995. He has worked most of his Library of Congress career at the Copyright Office, including many years as a Visual Arts Copyright Examiner. He has Master's degrees in Library and Information Science from Catholic University and Business Management from Central Michigan University. His under graduate degree is from l'Université de Montréal.
Rob Kasunic is a Principal Legal Advisor at the Copyright Office and has been at the Office since 2000. He is also an adjunct professor, previously at the University of Baltimore School of Law and currently at Georgetown Law School and American University's Washington College of Law. He has published several articles on copyright law and maintains a website on copyright law resources at kasunic.com. He received his BA from Columbia University and his JD from the University of Baltimore School of Law.

DPL: International Book Fair
Local, national and international authors and illustrators will discuss their work, present workshops and sign books at the Second Annual Dallas International Book Fair July 6-8 at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library, 1515 Young St., downtown Dallas.
The free event will also feature artistic and cultural performances for the entire family. Activities are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
“Our goal is to promote a love for books, reading and writing,” said Dallas Public Library Assistant Director Miriam Rodriguez, “This year’s event will celebrate Asian cultures, but will also include readings and performances from many different countries. It’s a free event that the whole family will enjoy.”
Among the illustrators and authors to be featured at the Book Fair are:
Yangsook Choi, named one of the most prominent new children's book artists of 1997 by Publishers Weekly and winner of the International Reading Association's Children's Book Award. William Poy Lee, author of The Eighth Promise, a rare glimpse of the Chinese-American immigrant experience from a mother-son perspective. Qiu Xiaolong, author of Death of A Read Heroine, selected by National Public Radio as one of the 10 best books of 2000. He will discuss his successful Detective Chen series. Juan de Recacoechea, whose recently released American Visa, has enjoyed incredible success in Latin America, and is the winner of Bolivia’s National Book Prize. Angel Esteban, professor of Granada (Spain) University will be presenting Gabo and Fidel, a book that takes on the intriguing topic of the close friendship between Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Fidel Castro. Monica Lavin, whose book for young readers La más faulera, about a girl basketball player in Mexico City is recommended reading for teenagers.
Local, national and international vendors will be selling books and materials in multiple languages to the public and to librarians that attend. The Book Fair will also present a variety of entertainment for children and families including multilingual storytimes, dance and musical performances.
