Free state statutory law - ready for prime time?

I read Paul Hellyer's article "Research at Your Own Risk: Free online statutory codes are widely available, but are they good enough to meet users' needs?" (AALL Spectrum, February 2011, pp. 18-19) and was dismayed to find that most states still do not have current statutes and codes online, and some do not even indicate when the last update was. Hellyer conducted his research during 2010, three years after the AALL report, State-by-State Report on Authentication of Online Legal Resources, in which the same conclusion was reached.

On February 17, 2010, ABA President Carolyn Lamm asked the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar to examine rankings of law schools. She did so to follow through on a Resolution of the ABA House of Delegates that the ABA “examine any efforts to publish national, state, territorial, and local rankings of law firms and law schools.” American law schools have many years of experience with rankings, and the Section on Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar, under chair Jerome C. Hafter, has endeavored to help the ABA leadership and the House of Delegates to benefit from that experience – particularly as that experience may predict how new rankings might affect law firms and the legal profession. To that end, Mr. Hafter appointed this special committee of members of the Council of the Section to report on the history and impact of rankings of American law schools.

LLB's Rate Your Legal Resources Vendors Survey: Customer Services Findings for BNA, LexisNexis, West and Wolters Kluwer


On September 29 2009, LLB launched its Rate Your Legal Resources Vendors: BNA, LexisNexis, West and Wolters Kluwer. The results of the survey are in. Over the course of the next couple of weeks, I will be reporting them. To Tweet or not to tweet, that is the question

With apologies to William Shakespeare.

Law Librarian Blog ran a poll recently and asked if law librarians were on Twitter. The results were posted today. The majority repsonding did not use Twitter, and those that did tended to be more of the academic persuasion. It will be interesting if they repeat the poll in another year to see if tweeting goes up or down.

Cisco GC Mark Chandler uses a variety of methods to keep his budget in line while streamlining certain routine legal processes. The reporter discusses how Chandler uses a mix of flat fee arrangements, meetings with outside counsel to ask "how can we be better clients", and streamlined internal processes to keep legal costs for Cisco down. One internal process: automated non-compete agreements.

Updated business filings article

Kathy Biehl's Business Filings chart on LLRX.com has been updated as of August 25, 2007. She has a short narrative paragraph for every state with links to business, secretary of state, business name, UCC, or trademark registrations that are available. She also notes which are no charge and which are subscription or pay per view.
