Registration is now open for the 2011 Joint MAALL/SWALL meeting

Registration is now open for Finding the Law in the Land of AHHS, the 2011 MAALL/SWALL joint meeting in Lawrence, Kansas, November 3-5th. Join your colleagues from 13 states and enjoy some Kansas hospitality, an exciting program, and a large Exhibit hall. Registration forms are available on the conference website, where you will also find the Preliminary Program.

We’ll be adding more content in the coming weeks, including information about the Friday evening Dine Around and the Friday afternoon tours. To receive the Early Registration rates, please make sure your registration is postmarked September 30th, or earlier. Full Registration rates will be expected for registrations postmarked October 1st, or later.

We must provide the hotel with the number expected for meals by 5 p.m. Friday October 28th. If you are mailing your registration in mid to late October, please also email Katherine Greene, kgreene@ku.edu, so that we can include you in the meal count. The meeting will be at The Oread Hotel, in Lawrence. Our room rate is $119/night (except for Sat. 11/5, which is $159/night). Our block of rooms will be released October 3rd, so please reserve your room no later than October 2nd. Lawrence is less than an hour away from the Kansas City airport. The Lawrence Convention and Visitors Bureau provides detailed travel information including all airlines serving Kansas City, and ground transportation options to Lawrence.

HALL/SWALL Spring Workshop

Every year HALL (Houston Area Law Librarians) provides professional development opportunities to their members through a Spring Workshop. This year SWALL is co-sponsoring the event!

The robust slate of topics will include a primer on creating and using QR Codes, alternatives to Westlaw and Lexis, legal research with online government information, a roundtable discussion on research skills for new associates (a dialogue between town and gown), best apps for law librarians, designing a web presence and the social media that should/could accompany it, how technology has changed the dynamics of law libraries, a Bluebook update, corporation bankruptcy research and Chinese law, digital community repositories, and new (and free) tools from the Harris County Districts Clerk's office.

Info on SWALL 2010 Meeting in Waco

“The SWALL 2010 Annual Meeting will be held just a short drive away in Waco, April 8-10. The SWALL meeting provides a cost-effective opportunity to collaborate with your colleagues outside DFW. The SWALL theme is “Adapt & Flourish” and features the hardy Texas Bluebonnet as its logo. Program proposals will be accepted until Oct. 23.

Also, I’m looking for 1-2 firm librarians to act as members of the Program Committee. The committee’s role is to plan the educational portion of the annual meeting program, addressing the educational interests and changing library problems of the membership as a whole. The most significant Committee work will take place in the month after the proposal due date and will consist of review and discussion through a Google group page and possibly a conference call or two.

The program proposal form will be posted on the SWALL website shortly or you can just write me and I’ll email it to you. I look forward to receiving proposals and hearing from anyone interested in joining the Committee. Thanks!! “

SWALL Grants

The SWALL Grants Committee is pleased to announce the availability of grants to attend the 50th Annual Meeting, April 10-14, 2008, to be held aboard the Carnival Cruise ship Ecstasy.

We will be awarding one grant for $1000 and two travel grants for $850 each. In addition, the Executive Board has approved three grants in the amount of $1000 each in honor of our 50th Meeting--these special grants are to assist those librarian's whose institutions prohibit reimbursement for travel outside the United States. This year's theme is Navigating the Sea of Information: Celebrating 50 Years of SWALL. The deadline for applications for the SWALL Annual Meeting is October 26, 2007.

We also have one grant for $1500 available to attend the 2008 AALL Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon. The deadline for this grant is May 12, 2008.

SWALL Meeting April 19th-21st

Registration is now open for Deserts in Bloom: Cultivating Information Access. The annual conference of the Southwestern Association of Law Libraries (SWALL) will meet April 19-21 in Tempe, Arizona.

SWALL is also sponsoring a book drive during the conference. Please consider donating a children's book and/or a book for senior citizens. The donations will go to two libraries:--Children's books will go to the Thomas J Pappas schools for the homeless.

There are about 900 students currently attending three campuses. The district also includes schools in juvenile detention and rehabilitation centers and the state hospital. There are about 1,540 students all together.--Books for senior citizens and homebound seniors will go to the Sun City Library, a 501(c) library run totally on community donations. The library is still using a traditional card catalog because they have no funding to automate. In order to raise funds they rely on donations of books, record albums, CDs, videotapes, DVDs, magazines, and audiobooks which they sell back to the community. Attendees may donate books and and other materials in good-to-excellent condition at the conference.
