Fastcase Hospitality Suite @ AALL14

Fastcase is happy again to sponsor and operate the PLL Hospitality Suite at AALL, for PLL members and friends at the annual meeting.  This year the location will be at The Ambassador Suite in Room 2032 of the Grand Hyatt Hotel.  Although the Grand Hyatt is not the AALL headquarters hotel, it is adjacent to the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center and across the street from the Marriott Rivercenter and Marriott Riverwalk hotels..

Come for coffee and breakfast in the morning, snacks during the day, a beer or glass of wine as the day winds down.  The suite will be open from 7:00 P.M to 12:00 midnight on Saturday, and from 7:00 A.M. to 12:00 midnight Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

There are a couple special notes. Sunday, July 13, the World Cup final is in the afternoon, and 7:30 P.M. until 10:00 P.M.,  will be BBQ NIGHT at the suite.  On Tuesday night is the MLB All-Star Game.  Want to schedule a meeting?  Need to get your panel together for a coffee-fueled rehearsal?  It's your suite, so come on over!  No dress code!

Resources For Researching & Tracking Patent Trial And Appeal Board (PTAB) Filings

Sponsored by the PLL Intellectual Property Caucus.

Thursday, February 20, 2014, 1-2 PM EST

With the enactment of the America Invents Act came the new Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), replacing the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences (BPAI). In this program we will review the types of actions now held before the PTAB, key documents, and terminology to aid you in your research.

Less than a year ago, PTAB filings and decisions (particularly filings) were not easily accessible through most legal research and docket vendors. However, in the past year, multiple vendors with varied focuses have developed numerous new products for document discovery in PTAB filings. We will compare and contrast what these vendors offer - decisions, filings, tracking - and the developments on the horizon.

Webinar space for this FREE program is limited to the first 100 registrants.  A recording of the webinar and the slides will be made available through the PLL-IP Caucus website.

Renaming PLL

Interesting discussion posted at the "On Firmer Ground" blog.

Renaming the Private Law Libraries Special Interest Section.

I've always wondered why we had "libraries" instead of "librarians" in our association names. I believe that our own association (Dallas Association of Law Librarians) is one of the few that does not have library in the title.

Hugh Forrest is Director of SXSW (South by Southwest) Interactive, a five-day festival and conference designed to promote community involvement with the innovation, inspiration, and creativity for generating new ideas and emerging technologies. Hugh will discuss counter-intuitive lessons learned from SXSW Interactive’s success such as:  SXSW Interactive is all about social media, but people attend the event because they make great face-to-face connections. SXSW Interactive is about the hottest new technologies, but one of the most popular elements of the event is the SX Bookstore. Hugh will use these and other points to argue that libraries need to continue to change, evolve, and adapt. However, given the lessons of SXSW Interactive, the future is probably brighter than we may think. LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/hugh-forrest/4/250/863
10:30: Keynote Speaker--Mark Chussil--You’ve Got the Data. Now What?
Most strategy challenges cannot be solved — emphasis on solved, not merely “responded to” — with data and information alone. Instead, they must be solved by combining intelligence (knowledge) with intelligence (human decision-making). In this interactive presentation you will not only hear about hidden traps that bedevil strategy decision-making; you will see those traps in action. It may shock but it won’t hurt. It might even amuse. Among the topics we’ll cover are:
·         The illusion of control. A strategy is a decision, not an outcome.
·         The delusion of confidence. Stop chasing certainty and start testing possibilities.
·         The exclusion of humanity. Something is missing from that spreadsheet…
·         An infusion of reality. How to get people’s attention and generate action.
·         The opportunity of a lifetime. Three secrets of success, hardly ever told before!
Mark Chussil is Founder and CEO of Advanced Competitive Strategies, Inc. and a co-founder of Competing.com. A highly rated and entertaining speaker, he teaches programs on strategic thinking at business schools, conferences, and corporate workshops. Mark is a pioneer in business war-gaming and strategy simulation. His technologies have won a patent (another is pending) and a best-in-class industry award. He has conducted business war games for dozens of Fortune 500 companies around the world, helping them make or save billions of dollars. He has written three books, chapters for five others, and numerous articles, and he has been quoted in Fast CompanyHarvard Management UpdateThe New York TimesThe Wall Street Journal, and other publications. He received the Fellows award from SCIP in 2013. LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/markchussil. Web: http://whatifyourstrategy.com/
