HHLib9: Encouraging Innovation and Technology, the top online tech conference for librarians, will feature inspiration and how to’s. MOOCs, Mobile Technologies - Their Impact on Reference Service

This online conference will focus on current and future technologies for reference services and the impact of MOOCs (massive online open courses) on the library. We will present an overview of current reference practices and offer tips and steps on specific techniques as models for the future. This conference is ideal for library directors, mid-level managers as well as front line staff representing college, university, public and corporate libraries.

From computers to the Internet, libraries have successfully met the challenge of adapting their services to changing technologies. Today's challenge is delivering services to smartphones, eBook readers, and tablets to users on the go who now view more content on mobile devices than desktop and laptop computers. CDs and DVDs are becoming passé, eBook sales outpace paper books, and users increasingly download music, movies, and books from iTunes and Kindle, storing their purchases in the Cloud.

This online conference will address the technical issues related to pushing library content and services to mobile users. Topics to be addressed include selecting and creating eBooks, building mobile-friendly websites, selecting and developing apps for library users, and circulating library materials through mobile devices. Our list of speakers includes librarians, academics, and business trendsetters. Amigos members and non-members, join our online conversation and be a part of this informative, interactive June 8 event.

It’s difficult to keep up with changes in mobile technologies, so spend time with us June 8^th to bring yourself up to speed. The conference will feature professional development for librarians by librarians. This is the grass-roots nature of our highly successful program. Handheld Librarian VI will build on the success of prior conferences in which an array of presenters share their experiences and insights on topics addressing themes such as ebooks, location-based social networking, lending devices, reference and mobile technologies impacting society. Our exciting one day conference, February 1, will feature presentations from your peers, along with two keynotes from respected thought leaders in the library world.

Michael Stephens, Assistant Professor in the School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University, will address the conference in the morning. His research focuses on use of emerging technologies in libraries and technology learning programs. He currently writes the monthly column “Office Hours” in Library Journal exploring issues, ideas and emerging trends in library and information science education. Stephens has spoken about emerging technologies, innovation, and libraries to audiences in over 26 states and in five countries, including a 2009 speaking/research tour of Australia. Our afternoon keynote features Stephen Abram. Stephen has over 30 years in libraries as a practicing librarian and in the information industry. He has visited hundreds of libraries in many different countries and is uniquely positioned to spark ideas and insights. Stephen is currently Vice President, Strategic Partnerships and Markets at Gale Cengage in Toronto, Canada. He has been Vice President Innovation for SirsiDynix and the Chief Strategist for the SirsiDynix Institute, VP of Corporate Development for Micromedia
