Innovation Tournaments: what are they and what can it mean for your library or organization as a whole?

by Corrine Vogel

I’m so grateful to DALL to have been able to attend this year’s Annual Meeting with the financial assistance of a DALL grant. As part of that experience, I had the opportunity to go to the Private Law Librarians & Information Professionals Summit on Saturday before the official start of the conference.

Karl Ulrich, the Vice Dean of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Wharton University of Pennsylvania led our innovation tournament. By innovation tournament Ulrich explains, you are trying to create a new match between a solution and a need you have, with that need being broadly defined. It is helpful to illustrate this need by envisioning the knowledge of need on a Y-axis with values ranging from an existing need to a new need, and the knowledge of solution on a X-axis with its values ranging from existing solutions to new solutions. Closer to the origin you pair existing solutions with existing needs in a new way, and as you travel further from the origin you pair new solutions with new needs. Ultimately all of these are considered “innovation” -- it just depends on what innovation you need.

At the Summit, we ran through our own innovation tournament, seeking innovation as it pertains to the question “What deliverables can librarians provide to strengthen their firm’s relationship with current or prospective clients?” We took the following steps:
(1) Gather ideas;
(2) Discuss these ideas with others;
(3) Screen what is valuable and what is not (this should be a low bar at first); and
(4) Continue to make new assessments about those ideas over time -- essentially filtering down to the best ideas.

While we only completed part of an innovation tournament, there was a theme among many of the ideas as well as more unique ideas that stood out. Many of the ideas focused on conducting research for clients and informing them of those opportunities, or having a standard checklist of research conducted for prospective clients or new matters. One unique idea included debriefing attorneys that have returned from  working in-house with clients -- to keep that knowledge preserved and use it to generate new ideas/initiatives within the firm. Creating a social responsibility partnership portal to serve as a connecting point for projects important to the firm as well as clients to assist the community was also proposed.

Ulrich offered suggestions on how to make innovation tournaments more successful:
(1) More ideas lead to better ideas, so make sure to include a lot of people.
(2) The specific people involved in the innovation tournament matter! Ulrich shared an example of one individual contributing six out of ten final ideas that rose to the top of the Wharton School of Business’s Branding Tournament. This means you should solicit participation from proven high performers and those with intuitive understanding. This is inherently hard to identify, so being more inclusive than exclusive with the people you involve is critically important.
(3) Variance is optimal. You want to get diverse ideas -- while law firms typically tend to limit variance, you can miss one amazing idea. Ulrich posits that it’s better to have 99 bad ideas and one amazing idea than 100 good ideas.

To implement this in your library, consider if you want to keep the innovation “closed” to professionals in the library, or if you would like to open it more broadly -- an “open tournament”. In a law firm this could mean including attorneys and other staff members; in academia perhaps including law students and faculty. Finally, in court libraries this might mean including judges, interns, staff, etc. while public law libraries could consider involving public patrons who frequent the law library.

Metadata Intersections: Bridging the Archipelago of Cultural Memory

DC-2014 International Conference and Annual Meeting of DCMI
8-11 October 2014
AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center
The University of Texas at Austin

Call for Participation: http://purl.org/dcevents/dc-2014/cfp

Researchers, practicing professionals and students with broad interests in principled metadata design and best practices have gathered annually since 1995 under the DCMI banner to exchange ideas, to discover important common ground, and to work on shared problems. As one of the first broadly inclusive efforts at crowdsourcing expertise on the Web, the DCMI community has been a key player in the evolving information environment of the Web of documents and data.

DC-2014 CONFERENCE THEME:
Metadata is fundamental in enabling ubiquitous access to cultural and scientific resources through galleries, libraries, archives and museums (GLAM). While fundamental, GLAM traditions in documentation and organization lead to significant differences in both their languages of description and domain practices. And yet, the push is on for "radically open cultural heritage data" that bridges these differences as well as those across the humanities and the sciences. DC-2014 will explore the role of metadata in spanning the archipelago of siloed cultural memory in an emerging context of linked access to data repositories as well as repositories of cultural artifacts.

BEYOND THE THEME:
Submissions of papers, reports, and posters are welcome in all areas of innovative metadata design and best practices.

IMPORTANT DATES:
Peer-Reviewed Papers, Project Reports & Posters:
— Submission Deadline: 3 April 2014
— Author Notification: 12 July 2014
— Final Copy: 16 August 2014

Special & Panel Sessions, Workshops:
— Submission Deadline: 3 April 2014
— Author Notification: 1 June 2014

Best Practice Posters & Demonstrations
— Submission Deadline: 2 June 2014
— Author Notification: 30 June 2014

Hugh Forrest is Director of SXSW (South by Southwest) Interactive, a five-day festival and conference designed to promote community involvement with the innovation, inspiration, and creativity for generating new ideas and emerging technologies. Hugh will discuss counter-intuitive lessons learned from SXSW Interactive’s success such as:  SXSW Interactive is all about social media, but people attend the event because they make great face-to-face connections. SXSW Interactive is about the hottest new technologies, but one of the most popular elements of the event is the SX Bookstore. Hugh will use these and other points to argue that libraries need to continue to change, evolve, and adapt. However, given the lessons of SXSW Interactive, the future is probably brighter than we may think. LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/hugh-forrest/4/250/863
10:30: Keynote Speaker--Mark Chussil--You’ve Got the Data. Now What?
Most strategy challenges cannot be solved — emphasis on solved, not merely “responded to” — with data and information alone. Instead, they must be solved by combining intelligence (knowledge) with intelligence (human decision-making). In this interactive presentation you will not only hear about hidden traps that bedevil strategy decision-making; you will see those traps in action. It may shock but it won’t hurt. It might even amuse. Among the topics we’ll cover are:
·         The illusion of control. A strategy is a decision, not an outcome.
·         The delusion of confidence. Stop chasing certainty and start testing possibilities.
·         The exclusion of humanity. Something is missing from that spreadsheet…
·         An infusion of reality. How to get people’s attention and generate action.
·         The opportunity of a lifetime. Three secrets of success, hardly ever told before!
Mark Chussil is Founder and CEO of Advanced Competitive Strategies, Inc. and a co-founder of Competing.com. A highly rated and entertaining speaker, he teaches programs on strategic thinking at business schools, conferences, and corporate workshops. Mark is a pioneer in business war-gaming and strategy simulation. His technologies have won a patent (another is pending) and a best-in-class industry award. He has conducted business war games for dozens of Fortune 500 companies around the world, helping them make or save billions of dollars. He has written three books, chapters for five others, and numerous articles, and he has been quoted in Fast CompanyHarvard Management UpdateThe New York TimesThe Wall Street Journal, and other publications. Final Day at AALL Conference

This is your DALL Reporter, Deinna Mims-Johnson, on the ground at AALL Annual Conference. On Day 3 I began my day planning to meet a newly made friend from Toronto, CA at the convention center to take a taxi together to the JFK Presidential Library. Once there our "brief video presentation" was interrupted by an announcement to evacuate the building because there was a threat. Without more being said we piled out of the museum and awaited for all to clear from the Museum Security Administrator.

The threat turned out to be minor and we returned to the library and completed our tour. I thought about the the recent killings in at the movie theater in Colorado. Walking through the museum brought back memories of some troubling times in American History: thoughts of when America was struggling with very complex issues. I am sure many of you recalled that faithful day  in Dallas, when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

The library is architecturally designed to reflect the beauty and calm of the Charles River and the Boston skyline. The night before Lexis Nexis had it's reception, I was unable to attend due to two other events. I can only imagine how beautiful it was at night because it was equally a commanding view during the day.

I hurried back to the Hynes Convention Center to catch another tour bus to the famed "Harvard Law School Library". The tour took about 45 minutes and we were shown the main reference area, the Special Collection, the main reading room. The movie, "Paper Chase," came to mind when viewing the beautiful chandeliers in the main reading room.

In closing, I departed Boston on a 7:30 am flight heading backto Dallas, This was your DALL reporter on the ground at AALL 105th Annual Meeting and Conference in Boston, MA.

See you next year.

Signing Off.

Day 2 at AALL -Boston MA

Hi this is your DALL  reporter on the ground at AALL 105th Annual Meeting and Conference.  My day was busy starting with a tour, "The Duck Tour " of Boston.  It is a 1 hr and 30 minute tour on land and water. By now you have guessed this is an amphibius vehicle, it was first built during World War II to aid with the invasion of Normandy. The Ducks as they were dubbed were made by female workers who took over the jobs in the factories when the men went off to war.

This vehicle rides fine on land and when we approach the water, the captain engages the rotor to go in the water. It was fantastic and ride in this vehicle was smooth and really incredible.  By the time I made it back from seeing portions of historic Boston, it was time for my session: "Driving Utilization and Firm Profitability Through Resource Customization" that had four dynamic presenters each from different law firms:  Molly Brownfiel of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner LLP, created a web presence that allowed self registration by user to vendor products, eliminating the third party distribution by the Library passwords.  Also Molly and her staff created a "How to Contact" link that provided the telephone number and name of techinical assistance personnel for each vendor.  This gives the user direct access to this information and a quicker resolution without inserting the Library's involvement  The user goes directly to the vendor to resolve his issue.

Next, Marguarita T. Young-Jones of Reed-Smith LLP, created a Library tab that included all library resources, services and widgets that allows immediate access to users without password input.  This firm had in common the infamous "Look-up Precision Tool"  encountered, compatibility issues with widgets created by vendors but after growing pains were able to overcome them and make available to users get and print, find and print, Matthew Bender Library and e-libraries as part of the library tab.

Emily R. Florio and Gina B. Lynch of Fish & Richardson both used creative ways to push direct access to the user resources in unique ways:  IP authenticating to provide direct access to purchased Surveys by  ALM 100 & 200 Surveys; built webpages that display  e-treatises and e-caselaw  and online training links offered by other vendors. Users can schedule training from the library website to vendors training sessions.

Gina, placed all her Apps on one tab along with instructions. She provided a framework on how to go about restructuring your website to make it more visible to partners and usable to all the staff and attorneys at Bingham McCutchen.  Then created Dashboards for HR Benefits,  Finance and Client development, remarkable .

That's all for now from DEINNA, the DALL reporter on the ground at AALL.

Teaching Legal Research Pre-Conference Workshop

This is your DALL reporter, Deinna Mims-Johnson, on the ground reporting from Boston, MA at the 105th AALL Annual Meeting and Conference.  Saturday I attended an all day workshop at Harvard Law School on "Teaching Legal Research".

The four presenters: Catherine M. Dunn, Karen Storin Linitz, Kate Irwin-Smiler, Margaret Butler and Sara Sampson were dynamic and thought provoking.  The 7 hour workshop was intense and had a massive amount of information to digest.  I walked away from this workshop knowing one thing: that law students are being introduced to primary and secondary resources along with being taught how to effectively utilize them in their legal studies while attending law school.

What was an eye opener is the amount of preparation, dedication, and passion these librarians have for their chosen profession. When we have the opportunity to meet the new associates, too much time has passed since initial instructions and actual real life use of the resources are required.

We left the workshop energized and determined to impart knowledge and instruction in many ways as possible:  taking into consideration learning styles, methods, pedagogy and the types of resources available online or print. After learning the correct way to engage in legal research the young attorneys will resort to old ways of conducting Google research. I am certain it is not because they have not been instructed or exposed to those materials.

Deinna Mims-Johnson is the Research Librarian at the Dallas Office of Thompson & Knight. She is the Grants & Scholarship Chair of the Dallas Association of Law Librarians.
